Tougher than I thought to get out of those cars

August 3, 2006

Some of the early results are in from the Gas Price Calculator and they are worse than I thought they might be. Not only are many people prepared to pay tens of dollars per gallon or litre for gasoline, but even when they take into account the useful time they gain on transit or the exercise benefits of cycling or walking, they still will use their cars.

Related, I ran into a web site www.pledgebank.com which has some mildly interesting “pledges” of the form “I’ll do this if X number of other people will…” The fascinating part was that there were several past pledges like “I’ll take transit to work” or “I’ll bike to work one day a week” – all of which failed to receive any significant support (in some cases no one else signed up.) I guess another reflection of the fact that we are wedded to our cars.
